Horses and Essential Oils

Let's start this blog off with some basic tips regarding using essential oils with horses.

- If your horse has any known health/medical condition, consult your veterinarian before using essential oils on them.
- Animals are generally more sensitive to essential oils than humans.
- Use the oils in moderation to start.
- Pay attention to your horses reactions to the oils.
*Introduce them to oil scents by applying them to yourself while you are around them.
*Perhaps let them smell the oils before you apply them.
- Keep essential oils away from your horses eyes. Be extra careful not to get any in their eyes.
- Do not use high-phenol oils on your horse.
*High-phenol oils include Cinnamon Bark, Clove, Mountain Savory, Oregano, Plectranthus Oregano, Thyme
*For a full list of high-phenol oils you can email productsupport@youngliving.com
- Start with 10 drops of oil. Dilution is not necessary unless the label states so.

Essential oils can be applied:
- to your horse's spine or flank
- by mixing into their food
- by dropping into their mouth (pull out the lower lip)
- by rubbing onto your hands and petting or massaging your horse
- by combining with water or V-6 Vegetable Oil Complex in a spray bottle and spraying on your horse

After applying essential oils topically the area can be sealed and protected with Animal Scents™ Ointment.
